At the end of the 20th century and due to climate change, avant-garde architects and engineers have had to adapt to the new times by developing a new architectural style called sustainable, green, ecological or sustainable architecture, eco-tech (ecological technology). The new regulations in criteria of energy eco-efficiency of buildings now obliges us to build greener and more sustainable buildings to take advantage of all natural resources while respecting the environment that surrounds us.
Intelligent façades that protect the interior of buildings from solar radiation with the consequent energy savings in air conditioning, photovoltaic panels, wind turbines generating electricity, large green areas that renew the urban fabric or rain collection, etc, without lose the totally free creative style of each architect, are getting to renew and beautify the cities around the world respecting nature, mother and teacher.
Very good examples of new green architecture built in this 21st century are the Hearst Tower by Norman Foster in New York, the Media-TIC Building in Barcelona, design by Enric Ruiz Geli, or the Agbar Tower by Jean Nouvel in the same city. Do not forget the pioneer World Trade Center of Bahrain design of Atkins, which became the first project in the world to use wind turbines generating electricity; also the O-14 of Dubai, which through the innovative double skin formed by a perforated concrete exoskeleton achieves a chimney effect with which an important energy saving is achieved inside the building; all of them are undoubtedly great examples to follow by other architects and engineers from around the world.
In the 21st century, contemporary architects already consecrated and assigned to different stylistic trends such as Frank Gehry, Norman Foster, Santiago Calatrava, Toyo Ito, Zaha Hadid, Renzo Piano, Rem Koolhaas, Jean Nouvel, Richard Rodgers or Herzog & de Meuron, among many others, surprise us every year with new modern and innovative proposals. True architectural icons of undoubted value that, without renouncing sustainability, manage to give their own identity to the places where they are built.
The new hybrid contributions (mixed use works), both horizontal and vertical (Tall Buildings and Skyscrapers), increasingly present in the cities, while providing modernity and progress towards the future, greatly improve the quality of life of the people and are very positive to continue on the road towards the XXII century. The works of this important directory are ordered in chronological order in time.
