La 8 Spruce Street (número 8 de la Calle Spruce), o también conocido como "New York by Gehry", se ha convertido junto con la torre del Banco de America en uno de los rascacielos de nueva construcción más interesantes de la ciudad de Nueva York en este siglo 21. La majestuosa torre de formas sorprendentes se encuentra emplazada en Lower Manhattan (bajo Manhattan), concretamente entre el Nuevo World Trade Center y el famoso Puente de Brooklyn; también muy cerca del Edificio Woolworth que ostentó el récord de rascacielos más alto del mundo hasta que fue concluido el Edificio Chrysler en 1930. Debido a la innovación de la fachada mediante módulos prefabricados de acero inoxidable, el nuevo rascacielos diseño de Gehry Partners LLP ha recibido el importante Premio al Mejor Edificio Alto de América 2011 por el CTBUH.

Lo más destacado de este nuevo rascacielos con tipología híbrida (de uso mixto) para la ciudad de Nueva York es sin lugar a dudas su preciosa fachada que ha sido confeccionada mediante paneles prefabricados de acero inoxidable. Haciendo el empleo de estos paneles se ha podido crear el innovador "efecto cortina", tan sorprendente y llamativo; esto le da a la fachada una imagen reconocible en el skyline de Nueva York, cuna de los rascacielos por excelencia junto con Chicago. La majestuosa torre, que se sostiene gracias a una super-estructura de hormigón armado, cuenta con un uso principal destinado a residencias privadas. El edificio se divide en cuatro cuerpos escalonados. En la base, como una especie de podio y que ayuda a crear entradas bien diferenciadas, se han previsto también varios módulos en los que se han destinado plantas de oficinas, un hospital y hasta un colegio.

Son 903 apartamentos y 175 plazas de parking sobre rasante con los que cuenta New York by Gehry. El titanio, un material carísimo y que Frank Gehry empleó en su obra maestra, el Museo Guggenheim de Bilbao, suele ser el inusual material que Gehry prefiere utilizar para revestir todas sus obras siempre que el presupuesto lo permita. Para la también llamada "The Beekman Tower" se empleó un sistema de muro cortina de acero inoxidable que resulta mucho más económico que el titanio y con el que también se conseguirá que la fachada pueda resistir por mucho tiempo las inclemencias del tiempo. El prestigioso arquitecto Frank O. Gehry ya había construido un edificio en la ciudad de Nueva York, el IAC Building, un edificio de oficinas que se encuentra localizado en la zona de Chelsea, frente al río Hudson.


La fachada deconstructivista diseñada por Fran Gehry responde al deseo del cliente de que cada unidad de vivienda tuviese grandes ventanales para aprovechar las maravillosas vistas con las que se podía contar, dado el bello enclave donde se erigió. The 8 Spruce Street, or also known as "New York by Gehry" has become the tower along with Bank of America Tower skyscraper in one of the most exciting new construction in the city of New York in the 21st century. The majestic tower in surprising ways it is located in Lower Manhattan, specifically between the New World Trade Center and the famous Brooklyn Bridge, also near Woolworth Building that held the record for tallest skyscraper in the world until it was Chrysler Building completed in 1930. The highlight of this new skyscraper typology hybrid (mixed use) for the City of New York is undoubtedly its beautiful facade that has been put together by stainless steel prefabricated panels.
