Construido durante la Gran Depresión, el Empire State Building se ha convertido en el edificio más querido de los Estados Unidos de América, no en vano, figura en el puesto número uno en una lista muy importante elaborada por el AIA Instituto Americano de Arquitectos, donde se recogen los 150 edificios más queridos y representativos de la arquitectura americana. El edificio se encuentra localizado en la 5ª Avenida con las calles Oeste 33 y 34 en la zona sur del distrito de Midtown, Manhattan, Nueva York. Su construcción, fue fruto de una interesante competición para construir el Rascacielos más alto del mundo entre Walter Chrysler, (Chrysler Corporation), y General Motors a través de su Vicepresidente John Jakob Raskob, quien impulsaría la idea.


El encargo del proyecto del Empire State Building fue solicitado al arquitecto William Lamb, de la firma Shreve, Lamb & Harmon Associates, quien se dejó influir en el estilo muy perpendicular de otro arquitecto importante, Eliel Saarinen / The task of the Empire State Building project was requested by the architect William Lamb, the firm Shreve, Lamb & Harmon Associates, who swayed in the perpendicular style of another important architect, Eliel Saarinen





60.000 toneladas de acero estructural, 10 millones de ladrillos y 1.886 kilómetros de cable de ascensor, se utilizaron para la construcción del famoso rascacielos de estilo Art Decó. Con sus 381 metros de altura, sería el rascacielos más alto del mundo entre 1931 y 1973, hasta que fueron terminadas las famosas Torres Gemelas del World Trade Center, tristemente destruidas el 11S de 2001. El revestimiento de la fachada esta formado por elementos de piedra caliza de Indiana y granito y cuenta nada menos que con 6.400 ventanas en la fachada. Desde el mirador de observación que se sitúa a 371 metros de altura se puede observar una vista panorámica 360º a la redonda desde la que se pueden divisar unos 130 kilómetros de distancia en días despejados, visualizándose Nueva Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut y Massachusetts.

Con un peso total de 331.000 toneladas, el Empire Estate Building se ha convertido en todo un símbolo de Nueva York y de los Estados Unidos de Norteamérica.
