Did you know...? On the south side of the beautiful Temple of Erechtheum that sits atop the Acropolis of Athens, is the portico adorning the famous Caryatids. Its name means "people of the city of Caria" in Laconia, which was an ancient region of the Peloponnese. This city was allied with the Persians in Medical Wars and its inhabitants were extradited by other Greeks condemning these women to withstand heavier loads making them slaves. Thus arose the idea of replacing the classical Greek column divided into three parts by the female figure carved in marble to support the entire weight of the temple as punishment.

above, this plan and elevation of Erechtheion Temple with the situation of the famous Caryatids in Athens. / The Erechtheion is situated on the north side of the Acropolis in Athens and on the very edge of the cliff adjacent to the Parthenon, and is considered one of the finest Greek temples of Ionic and irregular plant at different slopes with three porches, which was built between the years (circa 421 BC-c. 406 BC).
