above, anti-dive view from the level of the park below, interesting image of the construction process. To build such a huge monument, to 91 meters there was a reinforced concrete structure with a sliding formwork. From this point, different triangular sections to complete the structure insitu were uploaded and placed into position with the help of a crane.

up, drawing the project. The design of the St. Louis Arch was chosen from among no less than 172 proposals submitted in the contest, among which was also the father of Eero Saarinen, Eliel Saarinen (1873-1950), the legend says that the father of Eero received the letter as the winner of the contest by mistake.

For the design of the St. Louis Arch, Saarinen departed inverted catenary curve,-similar to a heavy chain hanging freely from two supports-, method which had been used by the master architect Antoni Gaudí and in some of his works most representative, and in the College of the Sisters, Casa Batllo, and Casa Mila (La Pedrera), among others.

The legs of the big arc settle on a triangular foundation 18 feet deep. The aerodynamics of the catenary arch structure was designed to withstand wind and earthquake sources, to get an idea of the enormous strength of the work, with a wind of 20 km. Monument Rocks hour 1 inch (2.24 cm.), however, the Arc has been calculated to support a full toss (oscillation in the vertical line) 18 inches (45.72 cm).

« The pyramids or Egyptian obelisks appeared to be the foundation of the great monuments that have retained their meaning and dignity over time. Neither an obelisk, nor a rectangular box, nor a dome seemed suitable in this location or for this purpose. But here, on the shore of the Mississippi River, a great arch seemed right.
