Map

The Chicago Spire is a new skyscraper designed by the prestigious Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, that when construction is complete, will become its 610 meters high Skyscraper in the United States of America. The majestic building Calatrava inspired by a shell of nature and will house 1,194 luxury residences when construction is complete. The avant-garde skyscrapers, which is situated next to the busy avenue of Lake Shore Drive, between Lake Point Tower (Navy Pier) and the Jay Pritzker Pavilion of Millennium Park, designed by Frank Gehry, consists of a slim body coiled in search of heaven, the Calatrava postmodern architecture undoubtedly bring modernity and progress to the city, and will become one of the few Megatall (skyscrapers over 600 meters high), as the Burj Khalifa by SOM.

The architect wanted to design the building, —located in the center of the skyline of the city at the foot of Lake Michigan—, imaginary form a pyramid with the famous Sears Tower and John Hancock Center, landmarks of the city of International Style, of the Second Chicago School. With the design of Santiago Calatrava, —who had already designed-other works in the U.S. and the Sundial Bridge in Redding, the new Metro terminal of the New World Trade Center or 80 South Street Tower, both in New York—, is still proving the good tradition of Chicago architecture, birthplace of the skyscraper for excellence along with New York.

Chicago, the Windy City and in that other great architects like Louis Sullivan, Daniel Burnham, Frank Lloyd Wright, Mies Van der Rohe o Bertrand Goldberg, among others, have left their architectural heritage, has become a city museum of international standing. Major artists such as Joan Miró and Pablo Picasso have also carried out several sculptures that now grace the city. Currently, the foundation of Chicago's Needle of similar construction process to that used in the HSB Turning Torso in Malmo by a metal casing filled with concrete because the water table of Lake Michigan, has already been completed. I would like here to encourage its Developers to resume construction again, as I believe will become one of the quintessential architectural wonders in this century XXI.

« It's very atmospheric. Not a building that is a strong statement on the horizon. We need the height, otherwise, the building almost disappears because it is very thin. Somehow I conclude, although we can not think that will soon be », Santiago Calatrava
