Auditorio de Tenerife

Auditorio de Tenerife by night

Did you know...? The Auditorio de Tenerife, by renowned Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, was coated mostly with Trencadís technique. The postmodern beautiful work located in the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain, has undoubtedly brought identity to the capital of Tenerife. This interesting technique so surprising and striking, originated in Art Nouveau or Art Nouveau, whose precursors were undoubtedly Gaudí and Jujol architects. The natural continuation of Trencadís applying it in his works since its inception in 1970 the famous architect Santiago Calatrava. The difference between the two in terms of this technique is that Gaudí used vivid colors in their work, while Calatrava uses color pure white above all, sometimes also cobalt blue color. The big plastic works of Calatrava,-accented with ceramic coating of Trencadís in white-, makes his architectural works in real sculptures in themselves.

Trencadís technique employed by Calatrava given in white-improved technique for producing this material with the passage of time which saves time and costs, consists in the application of cloths (a mesh of fiberglass) of 1x1 meter onto a tack coat, this mesh is covered with irregular ceramic pieces that adapt to any type of curved surface, perfect for both building facades to cover all surfaces and curves of complex geometry, however, the picture broken ceramic coating is almost invisible from a distance or middle distance.

Did you know...? Between 87 and 91 plants of the Taipei Tower in Taiwan Island, houses a complex device that prevents the building collapse reaches due to a collapse of the structure produced by any earthquake. To build the world's tallest skyscrapers in this region, the team of architects and engineers came up with the great idea to use a huge ball of counterweight to counteract any movements in the building caused by strong winds and typhoons, earthquakes supporting up 7 points on the Richter scale and winds of over 450 km / h., the huge steel ball called Damper Baby and weighs 680 tons, is secured by strong cords and 8 jacks.

Extensive testing in the wind tunnel were strictly necessary to carry out the reality of a work of such magnitude before had laid the first stone. In Asia, where many earthquakes occur quite frequently, are real specialists in designing earthquake-proof buildings, as this geographical region has to live with this kind of adverse weather as usual for much of the year. The Taipei 101, of 508 meters architectural, —the highest in the world from 2004 until finished the Burj Khalifa in Dubai in 2010, — evokes the figure of a pagoda 8 point, lucky number in this country.

Big Ben London

above, detail of a huge clock faces with different operators performing cleaning jobs. As a curiosity, the nickname Big Ben is due to name his biggest bells found in its interior, which weighs in at 13 tons.

Although the reconstruction of the old medieval palace was erected between 1840 and 1870, the beautiful Clock Tower Perpendicular Gothic style, also known as Rectilinear style due to the emphasis on straight line, was built between 1843 and 1859. The beautiful building, which has a final height of 96 meters and an estimated weight of 8,667 tons, has become over time a true emblem and symbol of the city of London. The tower, located on the north side of the Palace, west of the city and north of the River Thames, provides authentic identity to the area. The main body of the tower, 61 meters high, built by brick-walls was covered with sand-colored limestone. The coronation needle, which has spectacular Gothic motifs in shades of gold, was made of cast iron. The tower sits on a concrete foundation 15 feet square and 3 feet thick.

Despite advances inclination worrying about 0.9 mm. each year, and it would take about 4,000 years for the London Clock Tower reaches the same slope as the famous Leaning Tower. Although the inclination of the tower has been produced with the passing of the years, the major concern has emerged between 2002 and 2003, as it has been during the past two years has increased markedly when the deviation. According to recent studies, the inclination of the tower may be due to the construction of several underground subways and built 5 floors of parking under the building. Also, the water of the River Thames may be weakening not only the foundations of London's Clock Tower (Big Ben), but also those of the Parliament building (The Palace of Westminster), architectural Heritage Site by the Unesco in 1987.
