« Sé pintar y dibujar. Yo mismo me lo creo, y también otras personas dicen que se lo creen. Pero no estoy seguro de que sea cierto. Sin embargo, hay dos cosas que sí son seguras:

1. No existe ningún autorretrato mío. No me interesa mi propia persona como “motivo del cuadro”, sino más bien otras personas, sobre todo femeninas; aunque me interesan más otros fenómenos. Estoy convencido de que como persona no soy especialmente interesante. Nada hay en mí de especial. Soy un pintor que pinta un día sí y otro también, de la mañana a la noche. Cuadros figurativos y paisajes, raramente retratos.

2. La palabra, sea hablada o escrita, no es mi fuerte, y mucho menos si tengo que hablar sobre mí mismo o sobre mi trabajo. Hasta cuando me veo obligado a escribir una simple carta experimento angustia y sensación de mareo.

Por estas razones, habrá que renunciar a un autorretrato artístico o literario de mi persona. Cosa que tampoco es como para afligirse. Quien quiera saber algo sobre mí –como artista, que es lo único digno de atención– deberá contemplar atentamente mis cuadros e intentar inferir de ellos qué soy y qué quiero. », Gustav Klimt
